Habana lands player gong
South Africa’s World Cup-winning winger Bryan Habana has been named the International Rugby Board’s player of the year.
Following in the footsteps of team-mate Schalk Burger, Habana beat off competition from Argentina centre Felipe Contepomi, New Zealand flanker and 2006 winner Richie McCaw, French centre Yannick Jauzion and Argentina fly-half Juan Hernandez.
The flying wing equalled Jonah Lomu’s record of eight World Cup tries as his team claimed the title with a 15-6 win over England.
Fittingly, the Springboks were named team of the year, with their coach Jake White crowned top coach.

Wilkinson reveals ankle woe
England rugby hero Jonny Wilkinson has revealed an ankle injury left him barely able to complete Saturday’s World Cup final.
The fly-half turned his ankle in training ahead of the tournament and he missed the opening pool matches against USA and South Africa - to whom they lost the final 15-6. But, writing in his column for The Times, Wilkinson admitted he made his comeback far earlier than he would have liked.
“The fact is that my right ankle — the one I turned in our first training session in Versailles all those weeks ago — has been giving me trouble throughout the tournament,” he said. “I have been having treatment on it pretty much every day and, for the first time, I had to have treatment on it at half-time on Saturday.”
He added: “Phil Pask, one of our physios, said that the rehab on the ankle here was three or four weeks shorter than he would have liked.

Corleto looking for Springboks rematch
Argentina full-back Ignacio Corleto claims his side would beat South Africa if they replayed their World Cup semi-final game.
Despite Marcelo Loffreda’s side making history by clinching bronze after hammering the hosts France 34-10, the Stade Francais man told Ole newspaper that he would like another go at the Springboks match, which they lost 37-13, largely because of errors the Pumas made.
“I wish we could repeat the semi-final match. I’m completely sure we would win it, but we have already played it. We prepared ourselves the best way. I have a bad taste due to mistakes,” said Corleto.
He added: “We wanted to play in the final, but for the first time in my life, I’m satisfied with third place. I’m finding it very difficult to understand the defeat.

Ibanez banned after stamp
France captain Rafael Ibanez has been suspended for one match after admitting a charge of stamping on Argentina lock Rimas Alvarez Kairelis.
Ibanez was sin-binned by referee Paul Honiss for the offence at the end of the first half in France’s third-place play-off defeat to Argentina on Friday.
While he will not be available for Wasps’ EDF Energy Cup match against the Newport Gwent Dragons this weekend, the citing officer ruled Ibanez had not deserved a yellow card.
Judicial officer Jannie Lubbe ruled: “The referee’s reasons for his decision to award a yellow card for the incident…were wrong.”
