Catt coming to end of England journey

Catt coming to end of England journey
Mike Catt looks likely to bow out of Test rugby following England’s memorable World Cup campaign, and he admitted “It has been one hell of a journey.”

The 75 times-capped London Irish centre celebrated his 36th birthday last month, and it is unlikely he will figure in England’s 2008 RBS 6 Nations campaign, which starts against Wales at Twickenham on February 2.

Catt, a World Cup winner in 2003, said: “It has been a hell of a journey. Knowing what it feels like to stand on the other side of it (the medal dais), it feels a little bit different, but I am so proud to have been part of a group of guys like this.”

He added: “To come through what we’ve done and the way we’ve done it, beating two of the best teams in the world (Australia and France) against the odds is fantastic.

Historic ‘Ox’ ready for quiet life

Historic ‘Ox’ ready for quiet life
South Africa prop Os du Randt was happy to call time on his distinguished career just moments after joining a select band of players to have won two World Cups.

The 35-year-old was a member of the Springboks side that defeated New Zealand 15-12 at Ellis Park in the 1995 final.

Twelve years on, the popular Du Randt repeated those exploits by playing the full 80 minutes in his country’s 15-6 defeat of England in Paris on Saturday night.

Australia trio Tim Horan, Jason Little and John Eales are the only other players to have two World Cup winners’ medals in their collection, following the Wallabies’ successes in 1991 and 1999.

‘It was 100% a try’ - Cueto

‘It was 100% a try’ - Cueto
Mark Cueto has reflected on the moment England’s dream of making World Cup history drifted into oblivion, claiming: “It was 100% a try.”

And the Sale Sharks wing’s sense of disbelief was only deepened by texters who bombarded his mobile phone while England fought tooth and nail to successfully defend their world title.

Cueto said: “There were about 30 text messages on my phone. I think 29 out of the 30 had ‘robbed’ in the text.”

Had Cueto’s 43rd minute ‘try’ been allowed, then England might well have gone on to complete mission improbable and retain the Webb Ellis Trophy against overwhelming odds.

Ashton keen to keep going

Ashton keen to keep going
Brian Ashton admits he is keen to stay on as England coach after guiding them to the Rugby World Cup final.

Ashton recovered from a stuttering start to the tournament to steer England through four successive wins that earned them a shot at becoming the first side to retain their title against South Africa.

England could not pull off that feat but Ashton would welcome the task of overseeing the overhaul of an ageing squad: “It won’t be my decision and we will see,” he told BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek.

He added: “I need to sit down and talk it through with a variety of people. I love the job, and, on reflection, I would rather stay than not but it’s not my decision.”

Video ref got it right - O’Brien

Video ref got it right - O’Brien
Global referees’ chief Paddy O’Brien has heaped praise on Australian television match official Stuart Dickinson, insisting there is “no doubt” he was correct to disallow Mark Cueto’s try in the World Cup final.

England lost 15-6 to South Africa in Paris on Saturday night but the turning point was undoubtedly Dickinson’s ruling that Cueto’s foot had touched the line as he went to ground.

But O’Brien has been quick to praise Dickinson, who took his time before ruling ‘no try’.

O’Brien, referees’ manager for the International Rugby Board, told the Sunday Times: “It was an absolutely brilliant decision by the television match official, and there is a great photo of his [Cueto’s] foot just on the line prior to grounding the ball.
