Rugby is a popular sport in France, and the French national team are one of the best in the world. France compete annually with England, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales in the Six Nations Championship. France have competed at every Rugby World Cup and been runners-up twice. France also competed in early Summer Olympics when rugby was included - winning one gold and two silver medals.
Since the inaugural World Cup in 1987, France qualified for the knock out stage of every tournament, and were runners-up to the All Blacks in 1987 and to Australia in 1999.
France are commonly referred to as the ‘les tricolors‘ or ‘les bleus’.
