Italy Rugby World Cup Team

Italy are also known as the Azzurri, meaning ‘blues’, and “The Gladiators of Rome“. Although the title of Gladiators of Rome sounds impressive, they are not necessarily world class - with inconsistent results on the international stage being their downfall. Italy are however regarded as a strong force in the Northern Hemisphere where they have competed in the 6 Nations with some fine results in recent times.

Italy really came to prominence following 2000 when they became a part of the Five Nations, making it the Six Nations. Italy have also competed at every Rugby World Cup since the first tournament in 1987. Their best result thus far has been in 2003 where they managed two wins during the pool stages.

Italy are ranked 9th in the world.

Italy have played in all five world cup tournaments and have yet to make it out of the Group stages.

In 2003 they won two matches in a tournament for the first time, beating Tonga and Canada, but finished third in the group behind New Zealand and Wales.
