Record audience for semi-final
An average 18.3million people watched France’s World Cup semi-final defeat at the hands of England on French TV on Saturday.

It was a record TV audience for a rugby match on French TV and also national broadcaster TF1’s biggest audience of the year for any programme, with a 67.4% audience share.

For the last 10 minutes of the match, won 14-9 by England, there was a surge to more than 20million, according to L’Equipe.

The best ever ratings for a sporting occasion came in 2006 when 22.1million tuned into French coverage of the football World Cup semi-final between France and Portugal, an 80.3% audience share.
